ABOUT THE SERIES
HOOPS is a powerful new docu-series chronicling the journey of transgender basketballer Lexi Rodgers, whose eligibility to play inAustralia’s semi-professional NBL1 league was turned down by Basketball Australia following a single, high profile, viral tweet.
Rather than turning away from elite sport like so many transgender athletes before, Lexi signed on for a year of jumping through hoop after hoop, determined to satisfy the eligibility requirements to play in the 2024 season. She changed medication, adjusted her workouts, prepared medical reports, gathered testimonies from experts, all the while continuing to train. After a year of sitting on the bench, it finally looks like Lexi Rodgers might finally be ruled eligible to play the sport she loves. But the landscape has changed while she’s been on the bench. The Cobras roster is full for the season, meaning Lexi now needs to convince a coach to take her on — with no recent gameplay footage, no confirmation of her eligibility, and a rapid countdown to the season’s start.
Off the back of the series, Lexi was able to share her story in her own words on national breakfast television, national radio and contributed personal essays in the press. The series received a screening at NIKE HQ and was viewed by key stakeholders at the WNBL, AFLW and leading Australian sporting bodies who have the power to instigate change.
